Hands-On Cloud Security Training

Much like advanced flight simulators to a commercial pilot, the SEC488 lab environment is designed to provide students with practical, real-world experience to practice the theory and skills learned during lecture. With 15 hours of the course dedicated entirely to hands-on keyboard experiences, students walk away capable of "flying the plane", not just reading its manual. Students love the SEC488 exercises because they WORK! Constantly maintained to keep up with vendor updates, the SEC488 labs are resilient and students receive extended access to lab content via the course lab workbook.

This multicloud, immersive lab environment includes various cloud resources such as virtual machines, storage services, and security tools, all configured to simulate real-world scenarios, which allows students to gain comprehensive exposure to different cloud service providers. Students spend about 50% of lab time in AWS and 50% in Azure environments across 20 labs and a gamified capture the flag in Section 6. Some labs do have dependencies on other labs. For more advanced students, a fast forward script is provided for Lab 1 to get past the set-up steps to dig right into the more technical experiences.

Labs provide a crucial opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in a controlled setting, helping students to solidify their understanding of cloud security principles.     In the fifth section, we'll dive headfirst into compliance frameworks, audit reports, privacy, and eDiscovery to equip you with the information and references to ensure that the right questions are being asked during CSP risk assessments. After covering special-use cases for more restricted requirements that may necessitate the AWS GovCloud or Azure's Trusted Computing, we'll delve into penetration testing in the cloud and finish the day with incident response and forensics.     This final section of this cloud security training course consists of an all-day, CloudWars competition to reinforce the topics covered in books 1-5. Through this friendly competition, students will answer several challenges made up of multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, as well as hands-on and validated exercises performed in two CSP environments. They will be given a brand-new environment to deploy in two different cloud vendors and will be tasked to take this very broken environment and make the appropriate changes to increase its overall security posture.

Prerequisites

  • Basic understanding of TCP/IP and network security concepts.
  • Familiarity with general information security principles.
  • Knowledge of common cloud technology concepts (e.g., virtual machines, cloud storage) is beneficial.
  • Experience with the Linux command-line or cloud environments is a plus but not required.

A properly configured system is required to fully participate in this course. If you do not carefully read and follow these instructions, you will not be able to fully participate in hands-on exercises in your course. Therefore, please arrive with a system meeting all of the specified requirements.

Back up your system before class. Better yet, use a system without any sensitive/critical data. SANS is not responsible for your system or data.

MANDATORY SEC488 SYSTEM HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS
  • Wireless networking (802.11 standard) is required. There is no wired Internet access in the classroom.
MANDATORY SEC488 HOST CONFIGURATION AND SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS
  • Your host operating system must be the latest version of Windows 10, Windows 11, or macOS 10.15.x or newer.
  • Fully update your host operating system prior to the class to ensure you have the right drivers and patches installed.
  • Linux hosts are not supported in the classroom due to their numerous variations. If you choose to use Linux as your host, you are solely responsible for configuring it to work with the course materials and/or VMs.
  • Students should have an OpenSSH client installed on their laptop.

Your course materials include a "Setup Instructions" document that details important steps you must take before you travel to a live class event or start an online class. It may take 30 minutes or more to complete these instructions.

Your class uses an electronic workbook for its lab instructions. In this new environment, a second monitor and/or a tablet device can be useful for keeping class materials visible while you are working on your course's labs.
