Every day, analysts track what adversaries are doing and how we can better protect our networks based on that - but it's often overwhelming to track everything. STAR will let you hear from the people who do this on a daily basis and break down that information to let you take action on it in your own organization. STAR will approach threats from all angles, and you'll get different takes each month. Some months we'll focus on specific adversaries or malware, and some we'll focus on a broader view like industry targeting.
Hosted by SANS instructor Katie Nickels, an expert in network defense, incident response, and cyber threat intelligence, STAR delivers actionable insight directly from experts who do this work on a daily basis. The STAR webcast series explores a new topic each month from a variety of angles—from specific adversaries or malware, to broader-view subjects like industry targeting—giving you the latest on what’s happening in the threat landscape.
“We created the STAR webcast series to help the community wade through the overwhelming amount of information about threats,” said host Katie Nickels. “The webcasts are focused on bringing together different perspectives from the community to provide actionable information about threats from the experts who track threats daily.”
STAR kicks off on February 12 with a 1 p.m. EST webcast on Cyber Threats to the Electric Industry – What You Need to Know. Cyber threats to electric infrastructure such as power generation, transmission, and distribution continue to grow, but the reality of these threats– and seeing them as they are – is often clouded by fear, uncertainty, and misconceptions of the reality of these threats.
Nickels will be joined by guests Rob M. Lee, SANS certified instructor and author of "ICS Active Defense and Incident Response" and "Cyber Threat Intelligence" courses and founder and CEO of Dragos, and Tim Conway, technical director of the ICS and SCADA programs at SANS, for an in-depth exploration of this topic covering:
- A review of the current cyber threat landscape
- The reality of such attacks
- Defensive recommendations that security personnel should prioritize
- Where to seek nuance to avoid the hype
This webcast is intended as an overview of the subject suitable for a variety of audiences and will include deep dives into case studies and actionable recommendations mapped to frameworks such as ATT&CK™ for ICS.
