Attending a SANS Live Training event is an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in a hands-on environment led by instructors who are globally regarded in their industries. However, to make the most of your experience, being well-prepared is key. Bringing the right items can significantly enhance your learning experience. So, we talked with former students and compiled a top five list of items you should bring to a SANS Live Training event to ensure you're ready for anything during your training event.
1. Headphones
Headphones or earbuds can be useful during breaks or while studying during training. You can also listen to recorded material and other audio resources. They may also be useful for online or course activities or labs. Headphones can be a good way to tune out distractions when reading, focusing, or working on a course exercise or lab. And never forget the ability of some quiet time or soothing music to help with relieving stress and anxiety during a break or after a long day of learning!
2. Second Monitor
Juggling multiple applications during course labs can be a pain. A second monitor can help to keep your main screen dedicated to the most critical tasks. And while carrying a monitor seems impractical, tablets are very common these days, as are small portable monitors which are also very reasonably priced especially if you don’t need the full functionality of a tablet.
3. Comfortable Clothes and a Jacket
During long training days, you’re going to want to be comfortable. While you want to dress appropriately, it’s also a good idea to prioritize comfort. Classrooms can often get cold and not be adjusted, so pack a light jacket or sweater to ensure you stay comfortable throughout the day. Consider layering your clothing to adapt to varying temperatures as the day progresses.
4. A Sturdy Bag
A reliable carrying case like a backpack or a rolling laptop bag is essential for transporting your computer, course books, notebooks, pens, charging cable, and other items. With all these items to carry, a bag with good compartmentalization will keep everything organized and accessible. Be sure that you check if it’s comfortable to carry and has enough space for all your essential gear. Do you prefer the feel of a backpack or messenger style bag, or do you prefer to carry a briefcase-style bag or a roller bag? And while you want to make sure it holds everything you need, make sure it’s not so large that it becomes cumbersome to carry.
5. Government-Issued Photo ID
Don’t forget your government-issued photo ID. It can be a driver’s license, military ID, or passport, and is necessary to check in and receive your SANS badge. Your badge is critical, as it grants you access to your classroom and bonus sessions. Keep your ID on you at all times to easily navigate the check-in process, event floor, and training sessions.
Arriving at Your SANS Live Training Event
When you first arrive to the SANS training event, the first thing you'll do is check in and pick up your event badge and course materials (using the photo ID noted above). Your badge is your ticket to the event, so keep it with you at all times, (you won’t be able to enter your classroom or participate in other sessions without it).
For more specific details on the check-in process, including dates, times, and the exact location, be sure to visit the homepage of the event you’re attending. You can also download the welcome flyer or program guide to familiarize yourself with the venue layout and schedule.
Preparation is Key to Success
Maximize your SANS Live Training experience by preparing ahead of time. Pack these essential items and you’ll be well-equipped to fully engage in your training. Double-check your packing list before you leave, and get ready for a productive and enjoyable event!
